Free sports team app vs whole-club platform: what your club really needs
There are some excellent free sports team apps, and if you coach one team you should probably just use one. But "free" and "team" are doing a lot of work in that sentence — and for a whole club, they quietly become the catch.
What "free" usually means
Free team apps fund themselves somehow. That can mean third-party ads in the app, an ad-free tier you pay for, a transaction fee on payments, or basics like availability and RSVP tucked behind a paid plan. None of that is dishonest — it's just worth reading before you commit the club to it.
What "team" usually means
These apps are built around one team: a chat, a calendar, an RSVP. That's the perfect size for a coach and a group of parents. It's the wrong size for a club with several squads, juniors, a committee, a canteen roster and central billing — where you end up running one app per team plus a spreadsheet to tie it together.
When a club needs more than chat and a schedule
You've outgrown a single-team app when you find yourself needing:
- One member list for the whole club, not per-team silos
- Membership, renewals and digital cards
- Payments for memberships, shop items and event tickets
- Fundraising, auctions and sponsorship
- Volunteer rosters
- Attendance and selection, not just "who's in?"
How to choose without over-buying
Be honest about scale. One team, forever? Take the free app. A growing club? Add up the real cost of the free app (ads, add-ons, payment fees) and the hidden cost of the spreadsheets around it, then compare that to one platform that does the lot. Usually the "free" option isn't the cheapest once the club is the unit, not the team.
