Stripe vs Square for clubs: why you can (and should) use both

If your clubroom already runs on Square, a fair question comes up the moment you look at ClubApp: "Why is this using Stripe? We don't want a second payment provider to manage." It's a reasonable worry — and it's the wrong frame. This isn't Square versus Stripe. It's Square and Stripe, each doing the job it's built for.

You don't have to pick a side

Your bar, canteen and gate can keep the Square terminal they already know. Stripe just powers the payments that happen inside the app — memberships, event tickets, the club shop, fundraising, raffles and auctions. They're not competing for the same job. They're covering different halves of your club.

Nobody on your committee has to learn a new till, and nobody has to rip out hardware that already works. The question isn't "which provider wins" — it's "which tool handles which payment".

The short version

  • Square is a till. It's brilliant at face-to-face: tap a card at the bar, take $12 for two beers, done. Hardware in hand, person in front of you.
  • Stripe is a platform engine. It's built to sit underneath an app like ClubApp — taking online payments, splitting them to the right club, depositing straight to your bank, and tagging every transaction to a member and an item so your books reconcile themselves.

Asking Square to run your entire online membership, ticketing and fundraising operation is like asking a card reader to be an accounting system. Asking Stripe to replace the reader at your bar misses what Square is great at. Use both.

What Stripe actually does inside ClubApp

This is the part clubs don't see from the outside — and it's the reason ClubApp is built on Stripe.

Money lands in your account. Each club connects its own bank account, and payments from members flow to the club and are paid out straight into your account — not parked with a middleman. ClubApp never holds your money or sits in the middle of it.

Every dollar is tracked — to a member and an item. A Square sale tells you "$40 came in at 7:42pm." A ClubApp payment tells you "Sarah Nguyen bought 2 × presentation-night tickets for $40." Memberships, tickets, shop orders, raffle tickets, auction wins, Club Cash top-ups — each one is tied to the person and the thing they paid for, across every module.

Reconciliation stops being a Sunday-night job. Because everything's itemised and attributed automatically, your treasurer isn't matching a bank line to a guess. Reports, exports and tax-ready receipts come out the other end already reconciled.

Refunds and receipts are a tap, card security and PCI compliance are handled, and saved cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay all just work — because Stripe is doing the heavy lifting so your committee doesn't have to.

"So why not just use Square for the online stuff too?"

Because the job is different. ClubApp is a platform serving thousands of members across many clubs, and the money has to split cleanly so each club gets exactly its own takings, paid to its own bank account, with its own records. That's precisely what Stripe's connected-accounts model is designed for — it's the standard that modern apps and marketplaces are built on.

Square is outstanding at what it's for: a physical point of sale. ClubApp simply uses the tool that's purpose-built for in-app, multi-club, fully-tracked online payments. No knock on Square — different tool, different job.

The setup we actually recommend

Run both, and let each do what it does best:

Keep Square for

  • Bar & canteen card taps
  • Gate & door takings
  • One-off, face-to-face sales

Let ClubApp (Stripe) handle

  • Memberships & renewals
  • Event tickets & RSVPs
  • Club shop orders
  • Fundraising, raffles & auctions
  • Club Cash top-ups

Your members never see the word "Stripe." They just tap Pay in the app, and the money arrives in your account with a receipt and a record. Your bar staff never see "Stripe" either — they keep using Square exactly as they do today.

Club Cash: the bridge between the two

Here's where it gets genuinely better than cash. With Club Cash, members top up a balance in the app — online, via Stripe, from $5 up to $1,000 — and then spend it in person at the bar, canteen or shop. Money comes in cleanly online and gets spent across the counter with no float, no change and no card fee on every small round. It quietly cuts the amount of cash — and even card taps — your clubroom has to handle, alongside whatever point-of-sale you run.

"I still don't want another thing to manage"

You don't, really. Connecting Stripe is a one-time onboarding — enter your club's details and bank account once, and payouts run automatically from then on. There's no terminal to buy, no second system for your bar staff to learn, and no money parked somewhere you can't reach it. It's your account, your money, deposited straight in — ClubApp just drives it.

The bottom line

Keep Square at the bar. Let ClubApp — on Stripe — run the online side: memberships, tickets, shop and fundraising, with the money landing straight in your account and every item tracked automatically. That's not two payment providers fighting over the same job. That's your club finally having the right tool for each one.

Common questions

Do we have to stop using Square to use ClubApp?
No. Your bar, canteen and gate can keep the Square terminal they already use. ClubApp uses Stripe only for payments that happen inside the app — memberships, event tickets, the club shop, fundraising, raffles and auctions. The two cover different halves of your club and run side by side.

Why does ClubApp use Stripe instead of Square?
Square is built for face-to-face point of sale. ClubApp is a platform serving many members across many clubs, so it needs payments that split cleanly to each club, deposit to each club's own bank account, and tag every transaction to a member and an item. Stripe's connected-accounts model is purpose-built for exactly that, which is why it sits under the app.

Where does the money go?
Your club connects its own bank account, so funds from members flow to the club rather than sitting with a middleman. Payments are paid out straight into your account, and you can see exactly what came in, from whom, and for what.

Can members still pay in person without cash?
Yes. With Club Cash, members top up a balance in the app online (via Stripe) and spend it in person at the bar, canteen or shop. Money comes in cleanly online and gets spent across the counter with no float and no change, alongside whatever point-of-sale you run.
